How I'm making the most of summer fundraising for Asthma + Lung UK

Sue entered our summer competition, sharing an image of her training for a 7.5 miles swimming fundraising event for Asthma + Lung UK. Here Sue shares how she has been making the most of summer.

I’m fundraising for Asthma + Lung UK as my daughter, Lizzie, was diagnosed with eosinophilic asthma in 2021.

Eosinophilic asthma is caused by high levels of blood cells called eosinophils in the airways, which cause inflammation. Since her diagnosis, she has had several admissions to hospital. Asthma + Lung UK’s helpline has supported me and my family to help understand Lizzie’s condition, so I wanted to support them in any way that I could.

I decided to take on a crazy challenge at the age of 65 for an amazing charity close to our hearts. I have no previous long distance swimming experience and the image I shared is from a five-hour swim on holiday with my husband in France.

On the day of the challenge, the weather was warm which was brilliant. I had lots of my friends come to support me at the start and finish lines. I was really nervous, so it was great to have them there.

Lizzie was also at the finish line, which really surprised me as she was in hospital the week before. In total, I’ve raised over £2,400. I would encourage anyone to fundraise for Asthma + Lung UK. Now I’ve got my energy back, I’d like to do a yearly fundraiser but maybe something like a bake sale instead of long distance swimming!

Fundraising for Asthma + Lung UK gave me a surprising realisation

Earlier this year, Grace, who is part of our Research + Innovation team, challenged herself to walk 100 miles in March to raise money for Asthma + Lung UK. After signing up, she had the surprising realisation that she was one of the one in five people in the UK who will be diagnosed with a lung condition in their lifetime. Here she tells us about her staggering diagnosis of tuberculosis and her fundraising journey.
