Managing your grant

Find out what happens after your grant is awarded – from getting started and claiming expenses to reporting progress and managing any changes. We’re here to support you through every step of your project, including questions about budgets, timelines, or intellectual property.

Getting started

Once your application has been approved, you will receive:

  • An award letter
  • The Terms and Conditions from the Asthma + Lung UK Research + Innovation team

You are expected to start work on your project within one year of receiving these documents.

We're here to help

If you have any questions about:

  • Research reporting
  • Managing your grant
  • Requesting a no-cost extension

Please contact us on research@asthmaandlung.org.uk for support and guidance.

Budget claims + expenses

Claims for expenditure against your grant will be reimbursed quarterly in arrears upon receipt of invoices submitted to the Asthma + Lung UK Finance Research team, quoting your grant number.

Each invoice must include a full breakdown of all costs claimed:

  • Salary costs
  • Itemised consumables costs
  • Itemised equipment costs

For individual items over £500 (e.g. equipment or consumables), please include a copy of the supplier's invoice or receipt.

Changes to your project

Any changes to your project must be approved in writing by Asthma + Lung UK. This includes:

  • Staff changes
  • Amendments to protocol
  • Virements of costs between budget codes
  • Requests for no-cost extensions

Always contact us before making adjustments to ensure compliance with your award conditions.

Progress + outcome reporting

For all awards lasting longer than 12 months, Asthma + Lung UK requires:

  • An annual interim report, and
  • A final report at the end of the grant period

You can find full details on our Progress reporting and sharing your work.

Intellectual property (IP)

Asthma + Lung UK encourages the commercial exploitation of research results.

This ensures that:

  • Research findings are translated more swiftly into patient benefit, and
  • Revenue can fund future research projects

Important IP responsibilities:

  • Grantholders should identify potential intellectual property (IP) early and keep Asthma + Lung UK informed.
  • The host institution should ensure ownership of IP arising from funded work vests in the institution (or its associated technology transfer company).
  • All funded researchers, host institutions, and technology transfer companies should ensure the protection and exploitation of IP.

Before exploiting IP, you must obtain written consent from Asthma + Lung UK (consent will not be unreasonably withheld).

Data protection

Asthma + Lung UK complies with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998 with regard to the collection, storage, processing and disclosure of personal information and is committed to upholding the Act's core data protection principles.
