We first planted the tree in the front garden of our new house in 1978. When we first moved to the village from London, we liked how there were no street lights. Our tree with its few lights stood out on our dark street that year.
It's no small feat to decorate
Since then, the tree has continued to grow and we needed more and more lights to decorate it. The tree has become famous in our local village. At now over 50 foot high, it’s no small feat to decorate and since 2005, local company S.E. Davis & Son have supplied a cherry picker to help. They even supplied new lights after the old ones were damaged in gale force winds in 2024.
It's the start of the festive season for many
My husband sadly passed away from COPD and emphysema last year. Just before last Christmas he was really poorly from a chest infection and decorating the tree was a huge strain. But we knew how important it was to the village – the tree has even received Christmas cards from neighbours! Many say it is the start of the festive season for them.
I decorated the tree in Chris's memory this year
It was really important to me to decorate the tree in my husband’s memory year this year. Every year we pick a worthwhile charity to donate to and this year Asthma + Lung UK seemed the perfect one to choose. I hope the tree continues to bring a lot of pleasure to everyone who sees it and continue to raise a lot of money for charities.
