Advice + Support

Hot off the Helpline: April edition

Welcome to the Asthma + Lung UK Helpline Blog where we’ll cover hot topics on the helpline. We’ll also share ways to help manage your lung health and important dates for your diary. And you’ll meet our amazing team.

On the Helpline this month

On the helpline this past month we’ve noticed an increase in calls from people concerned about worsening symptoms of their lung conditions or are experiencing flare-ups.

We have great information on the website about managing worsening symptoms specific to your respiratory condition. In all cases refer to your self-management plan and contact your GP or healthcare professional if your symptoms are getting worse. They will be best placed to do an assessment and review of your symptoms and condition and start any appropriate treatment. As always, you’re welcome to call our helpline for advice and support.

As spring is in full swing, many people find the increase of triggers - such as flower and tree pollen - along with the change in temperature and humidity can be an issue. It’s important to identify what may be a trigger for you and try to avoid these. Make sure your condition is well managed and know what action to take if your symptoms get worse.

Find out how you can identify your triggers on our website.

Meet the team

This month, meet Holly, she is a Respiratory Nurse Specialist and works on the clinical helpline and our WhatsApp service. She’s an expert in Asthma, COPD and Bronchiectasis and a special interest in working with the charity's social media, including moderating the one of our Health Unlocked Forums and writing this blog!

You can find out more about our Health Unlocked Forums in next month's edition.

Dates for your diary

This month has some important dates in the respiratory calendar.

World Breathing day is April 11 - This year’s theme, ‘Reconnect & Breathe Together’ represents shared commitment to human reconnection, cultivating personal wellness and magnifying global unity. Breathing is the universal language that binds us all; it connects us to ourselves and to each other, transcending cultural, religious and geographic boundaries. It’s run by the International Breathwork Foundation.

World Sarcoidosis Day is April 13 - World Sarcoidosis Awareness Day draws attention to this inflammatory disease. The day also encourages those who have this condition to support one another and educate others about living with sarcoidosis

While sarcoidosis is a rare disease, it still affects thousands of people around the world. In the UK, the disease affects about 108,000 people. Also known as sarcoid, this condition occurs when cells in the body clump together to make small lumps. These small lumps are called granulomas and they usually grow in the lymph glands and lungs.

Support group spotlight

This month spotlight is on the Harmonica for Lung Health sessions. You will learn to play some folk, country and blues music, as well as learning new breathing techniques and strengthen your breathing and coughing muscles.

The harmonica sessions run every Thursday from 10:30 – 11:30 and you will need a harmonica to join.

Thanks for reading this month’s blog. Stay tuned for next month’s edition.
