The role is open to anyone with a commitment to making a difference, whether you have a lung condition yourself, have supported a loved one with one, or simply want to help others live better lives. This is a rewarding opportunity to support a group that has been a lifeline for many people across the capital.
There are more than 600,000 people living with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) across London, and air pollution contributes to around 4,000 early deaths in the city every year.1,2 These figures highlight the ongoing need for local peer support and opportunities to learn more about managing lung conditions.
This group meets online via Zoom on the third Wednesday of every month from 1pm to 2pm. The meetings include guest speakers, group discussions, and emotional and practical support for those living with lung conditions like asthma, bronchiectasis and COPD. With the right leader, the group can continue to thrive, bringing vital knowledge, companionship and resources to people across London.
No prior experience is required, and full training and support are available. If you're confident with Zoom (or happy to learn), enthusiastic about building a supportive community, and able to commit to one hour a month for meetings, this role could be ideal for you. Don’t worry if you can’t take on the responsibility alone, roles can be shared between volunteers.
Linda Makins, the former leader of a London support group, said:
"I will be eternally grateful for the experience which has enriched my life in so many ways. I first joined the group in 2017, following my COPD diagnosis, and immediately enjoyed the opportunity to make new friends, particularly people with similar conditions who share the many difficulties caused by the breathing problems which can limit our mobility, affecting so many issues in our everyday lives.
"Helping to organise the Breathe Easy Group meetings and invite a wide range of guest speakers was an incredibly informative experience. Making contact with experts and organisations like Open Age, Health Watch, and Talking Therapies provided us with tools and activities to improve both mental and physical health. I would highly recommend getting involved with a Breathe Easy Group as a life-changing experience."
