Asthma + Lung UK appoints Clinical Leads Dr Matthew Swallow and pharmacist Nazir Hussain

Lung charity appoints two healthcare professionals, each bringing extensive clinical experience and respiratory insight

Asthma + Lung UK is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Matthew Swallow and Nazir Hussain FRCPharm to join the lung charity in its Clinical Lead role.

Dr Swallow is a GP in the West Midlands and works on respiratory care for the area’s Integrated Care System (ICS). In recent years he has served as one of Asthma + Lung UK’s Respiratory Champions, driving improvements across the West Midlands. Matthew specialises in pathway transformation, diagnostics and neighbourhood level respiratory care. He is widely recognised for developing high-quality respiratory business cases that support commissioning decisions and strategic investment.

Nazir Hussain is a multi-award-winning specialist pharmacist from the West Midlands and is also a member of Asthma + Lung UK’s Council of Health Care Professionals. He has a passion for reducing health inequalities and improving respiratory care. Much of Nazir’s work has been focused on redesigning services, so care reaches the people who need it most, improving population health outcomes and strengthening collaboration between communities and healthcare services.

As Clinical Leads for the charity, the two healthcare professionals will help the charity continually improve the quality of its services. In addition, they will ensure the charity’s clinical information, support and advice is based on sound clinical evidence, guidance and practice. They will take up their positions following the departure of previous Clinical Lead Dr Andrew Whittamore, who was with the charity for more than a decade.

Dr Matthew Swallow and Nazir Hussain join the charity as it continues its work to transform lung health, champion increased investment into respiratory research, campaign for cleaner air and improve care for people living with lung conditions such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Mike McKevitt, Director of Services at Asthma + Lung UK, said: “I’m delighted to welcome both Dr Matthew Swallow and Nazir Hussain to Asthma + Lung UK, as the charity continues its mission to transform the nation’s lung health.

“Both have vast respiratory clinical experience and will support the charity to better serve people with lung conditions. I look forward to working with them both.”

Dr Matthew Swallow said: “I am delighted to be joining Asthma + Lung UK at such an important moment for respiratory care, a time of opportunity. With the growing focus on neighbourhood working and more integrated models of care, there is real potential to dramatically improve how respiratory services are delivered. The charity sector has a key role and I look forward to bringing together clinicians, communities and commissioners to improve outcomes for people with lung conditions.

“My priority is supporting people living with respiratory disease, improving access to high-quality diagnosis and treatment, reducing variation in care and helping ensure everyone, wherever they live, can breathe better and live well.”

Nazir Hussain, said: “I am super excited to take on this influential national role and determined to keep advocating for better care and outcomes for people with respiratory disease across the country.”

“I am passionate about designing services so that care better reaches the people who need it most, in turn improving health outcomes for people as well as strengthening collaboration between communities and healthcare services.”
