Sophie's story
Sophie was diagnosed with bronchiectasis when she was 4 years old. Now 24, she shares how she manages her condition using a plan.
“My self-management techniques have changed as I’ve gotten older. I admit I have been complacent with my self-management at times, especially throughout my university years.
“When I was younger my management techniques were focused on physical activity as my consultants and chest physiotherapist emphasised how important it was. I swam competitively and also did tap, jazz, ballet and lyrical dancing.
“As part of my physio, my parents would gently hit my chest with a cupped hand shape to help loosen up the mucus on my lungs. I also had breathing exercises that really helped with huffing and coughing techniques to clear my lungs.
“My self-management plan has been really helpful to refer to as it reminds me what I should do to help control my symptoms and prevent flare-ups.”
“Now that I’m older I will focus on completing my chest physio exercises when my chest feels tight or I feel I am becoming unwell. Having these interventions in place helps me during a flare up."
Rae's story
Rae was diagnosed with bronchiectasis when she was 13 years old. Here she shares how she manages her lung condition and the importance of having a self-management plan.
"It’s important for me to always have a self-management plan to help manage my condition and stay organised, especially as I'm a teacher.
“One technique I would encourage other people with bronchiectasis to try is regular breathing exercises. I follow exercises given to me by my physiotherapist and over time have become more independent in managing my condition. It helps me to clear my lungs and feel more in control.
“My self-management plan includes my breathing exercises, warning signs that I may be having a flare-up and acting quickly if I need antibiotics from my GP. It’s about being proactive rather than waiting until things get worse.
“My plan always helps if I’m having a flare-ups. I recently noticed my phlegm changing colour and I started to feel weak. I knew it was time to slow down, focus on rest and contact my doctor for antibiotics. A plan is really helpful as it’s helps to support me to find ways to manage my symptoms.”
