New community support group in Bury offers lifeline for people with lung conditions

A new Asthma + Lung UK support group for people living with lung conditions has opened its doors in Bury.

A new Asthma + Lung UK support group for people living with lung conditions has opened its doors in Bury. The group offers people living with conditions like asthma, bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) the chance to join a friendly community and get practical advice and help to manage their lung health.

The Bury Breathe Easy Group meets on the last Thursday of each month, in the Community Room in Morrisons, Stanley Road, from 10.30am to 12pm. Run by Asthma + Lung UK volunteers, including group leader Caroline Allen, the meetings are held in person and include guest speakers, group discussions and advice from respiratory specialist physiotherapist Katy Bentley. Members also can share their experiences and support each other through the challenges of living with a lung condition.

One in five people in the UK will develop a lung condition during their lifetime and many struggle with breathlessness, which can make every day activities difficult or even impossible.1 Asthma + Lung UK’s support groups are a lifeline for many people across the UK, offering practical advice, emotional support, and connection for those living with lung conditions. These groups are made possible thanks to funds raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, helping to ensure people don’t have to face their condition alone.

Caroline Allen, volunteer leader of the Asthma + Lung UK Breath Easy group, said: “We’re delighted to start this new Breathe Easy group for people in Bury. Living with a chronic lung condition can be isolating and frightening. We aim to build a strong, supportive community with this new group, as well as offering lots of useful advice and practical sessions to help people live well with a lung condition. We’re already off to a great start and we’d love even more members to join our community. Bury is better with Breathe Easy in it!”

Katie Papas, Community Digital Engagement Manager at Asthma + Lung UK, said: “Our support groups help thousands of people every year. We regularly hear from attendees and leaders how valuable our groups are. And it’s more than just social benefits, with GPs regularly referring people, to help improve management of their condition. People that attend our groups can understand proper inhaler technique, learn breathing strategies from physiotherapists and even reduce emergency hospital visits.”
