I was diagnosed with asthma as a child and spent a lot of time in intensive care because it wasn’t well controlled.
Things took a turn when my spine collapsed when I was 18 which was a result of a birth defect. It really impacts my asthma, as I can’t clear my lungs properly. Shortly after this I was diagnosed with severe asthma.
I begged to be put on biologics
Every year I would have at least four hospital admissions, so my consultants put me on steroids. I wanted to get referred for biologics as the nurses on the Asthma + Lung UK helpline explained that they could help control my asthma.
I begged my respiratory nurse for a biologic as I knew this was my only hope to no longer have to use steroids. It was a very long road but, in December 2024, I got approved to start Tezspire, a type of biologic.
Now I feel hopeful for the future
A year ago, asthma ruled my life. I wasn’t able to leave my house if one of my neighbours had a BBQ. My daughter has seen me have severe exacerbations, things that no child should have to see. She’s been there when I’ve woken up in intensive care, saying she doesn’t want to lose me.
Since I’ve been on biologics, I’ve only had 1 hospitalisation. I’ve been able to take my daughter to her first ever bonfire night and we now can have BBQs in our own garden. I’m really hopeful for the future.
