πΈ The Asthma + Lung UK Breathing Space Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026
At the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026, we invite you to step into a garden designed for everyone whoβs ever had to stop and catch their breath.
The Asthma + Lung UK Breathing Space Garden, supported by Project Giving Back is a calm, restorative retreat that celebrates the connection between nature, wellbeing, and healthy lungs.
A Moment to Pause, Breathe, and Reconnect
πΏ About the Garden
Our garden, designed by Angus Thompson, captures the rhythm of gentle breathing through form, flow, and stillness.
Visitors will wander along accessible pathways and graded steps, leading to a serene floating platform framed by two majestic pine trees β symbols of strength, resilience, and clean air.
Flowing water, soft greenery, and delicate accents of purple and orange create a soothing sensory experience β a place where visitors can truly stop and breathe.
π Design Inspired by Breath and Balance
The garden draws on the Japanese aesthetic of yohaku no bi β βthe beauty of empty spaceβ β a design philosophy that embraces simplicity, quietness, and clarity.
Every element is thoughtfully chosen to encourage calm and relaxation:
- Accessible, inclusive design for all visitors
- Low-allergen planting for sensitive lungs
- Sustainable materials including carbon-capture concrete and FSC timber
- Rainwater collection systems and wildlife-friendly features
- Recycled oxygen cylinders reimagined as art and structure
π More Than a Show Garden
After Chelsea, the entire garden will be relocated to Rotherham, where it will become part of the Breathing Space lung rehabilitation centre β a lasting sanctuary offering holistic support for people living with lung conditions.
Through this garden, we aim to highlight the unseen challenges of breathlessness, the importance of clean air, and the mental and physical benefits of access to green space β especially for those who need it most.
π Why It Matters
One in five people in the UK will develop a lung condition in their lifetime.
Through this garden, Asthma + Lung UK hopes to inspire visitors to take a deep breath β and to take action: for cleaner air, greener cities, and fair access to nature for all.
